‘Illuminated’ manuscript is the name given to text which contains gold or silver which reflects the light. A manuscript which is richly decorated in colour only, without having gold or silver is, technically, not illuminated.

Illumination with gold goes back into antiquity but is especially common in the later Middle Ages in manuscripts such as Books of Hours.

These days, gold leaf continues to be used to create either that classic illuminated look or a clean modern simplistic letter in an ornate frame can look just as on trend.

This one day course gives you a quick insight on how to apply and achieve a great gold leafed initial. You will see how striking the gold makes any type of work, be it a large piece or just small highlights. This effect cannot be achieved by gold paint no matter how metallic it is.

Our workshops are always light hearted, fun and are aimed to give a taster of the basic skills needed to produce beautifully illuminated script.

Learn a little about the history of Illuminated Manuscripts and finish the workshop by producing up to two illuminated letters, demonstrating all that has been learned during the day.

Prior to the class you need to select two initials to work with that Jane will bring to the class. One letter you will glue for the gold leaf and one you will illuminate whilst awaiting the glue to dry on the other initial. Time permitting you may be able to complete both letters ' Gold Leafed'!

Everything is provided for the class including glue, one sheet of gold leaf, brushes, paper and paints along with Jane’s years of knowledge on this historic skill.

Many other products for excelling at this art will be available to buy on the day.
